Course content
The course will introduce the principles of ion trapping in Paul and Penning traps and on the description of motion and mutual interaction of charged particles in these traps. Students will become familiar with theoretical description of light-matter interaction at single atom level and with laser cooling techniques. The course will end with introduction into principles of mass spectroscopy, frequency metrology and quantum information processing with trapped ions.

The course will focus on basics in the field of trapping and manipulation of charged atomic particles.
Knowledge Define the main ideas and conceptions of the subject, describe the main approaches of the studied topics, recall the theoretical knowledge for solution of model problems.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of basic principles and formalism of quantum physics.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Attendance, active participation in class, presentation of a selected scientific paper from the field of trapped ions and passing of the final test.
