Key learning outcomes Graduates receive comprehensive overview of the chemical, metabolic and physiological principles how living systems are functioning, about the basic structure and functions of biomolecules and the basic methods of studying them. They gain a comprehensive understanding of the possibilities of the use of microorganisms and plants in many areas of research, development, industrial applications and environmental protection. They are able to operate and practically use modern analytical methods in biotechnology. The emphasis is on the practical ability of experimental work in the laboratory and complete ability of the searching and use of scientific literature to solve problems in the field of biotechnology. Teaching is conducted in the light of current trends in experimental and applied biotechnology. Students have the opportunity to attend industrial practice and biotechnological projects to become familiar with the practical organization of work in scientific research, diagnostic or industrial laboratories. The aim is to prepare graduates for a comprehensive theoretical and practical solutions of the fundamental problems in biotechnology.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples Graduates in the programme Biotechnology and genetic engineering are familiar with modern biotechnological methods and procedures to be able to apply them practically. They are able to use the methods of analysis of biological material, including recombinant DNA technology and gene cloning, transformation of bacteria and plants, the isolation and characterization of genes and molecular markers with the use of them in biotechnology. They are qualified to perform molecular methods and techniques of cultivation of microorganisms and plants, tissue cultures and preparation of biotechnologically important compounds. Graduates are thus becoming experts in various fields of industry, academia and government with biotechnology, biochemical and environmental focus. It is expected that most of the graduates of study programme will continue in the master's program.
