Key learning outcomes The single-major degree programme of General Linguistics and Theory of Communication encounters its students with central linguistic subdisciplines. It includes, above all, courses of: History of Linguistics, General Linguistics, Theory of Grammar and Current Approaches to Theory of Grammar. At the same time, it acquaints the students with central disciplines of communication theory via the courses of: Information Theory, Communication Theory, Critical Discourse Analyses and Complex Communication Process Analyses. Cross-disciplinary nature of General Linguistics is ensured by the obligatory courses of: Semiotics and Philosophy of Science. The empirical focus of the study is presented in the courses of: Quantitative Linguistics, Linguistic Experiment and Methods of Empirical Research. Given the previous study or one's own deeper interest, the student chooses his or her specialization which determines at the same time the choice of the diploma thesis topic and the range of optional courses. The student may also choose an individual specialization after an agreement with the diploma thesis supervisor. The chosen specialization, furthermore, determines state final examination topics. The programme courses are designed so that the student is able to link the knowledge gained and research, and manage to verify it using some chosen texts. Students participate in the scholarly and research activities of the department. They take part in elaborating department publications, in collaborating with foreign partners etc.
