Key learning outcomes
The study programme respects and addresses the interdisciplinary character of culture and cultural practices, with an emphasis on the theory and analysis in a broadly interdisciplinary framework, including its elementary contexts (social, mediological, aesthetic, philosophical etc.). The programme is thereby designed with regard to two basic goals: I. to develop a comprehensive range of disciplines adequately covering the issue defined, II. to enable students to further specialize within this spectrum in a specific area, which should be saturated with an adequate array of course electives. The programme concept is structured into two course categories: - required, which provide a comprehensive context of learning in the theory of culture and cultural practices at the Master's degree level (i.e. training experts in the relevant specialization); - electives, which are focused on more systematic and deeper study of one or more specific areas, so that students, given the breadth of the issue, could specialize in a narrower field after completing the required courses, in which they can further deepen and develop their knowledge The programme curriculum is thus structured into several basic units and supplementary blocks of courses. 1) The core of the programme includes required courses, which provide graduates with knowledge and competencies leading to a broad framework of knowledge connected to general problems of cultural practices and their analysis - the nature of these disciplines will ensure that the graduates have sufficient understanding of the given field and its current state (Cultural Studies 1 and 2, Theory of Culture, Theory of Text, Theory of Image, Theory of Audience, Critical Theory as Key to Cultural Contents 1 and 2, Cultural History) - and also are able to apply the acquired knowledge in specific analyzes (Textural Analysis, Visual Studies, Auditory Analysis) 2) Electives are structured into blocks/modules formed by thematically related courses, the combination of which enables the student to specialize in a certain type of reflection on cultural practices. The courses thematize the following areas: - culture and media (Media Studies 1, Media Studies 2, TV Studies 1, TV Studies 2, Comic Theory: Comics Studies) - culture and interpretation (Problems of Semiotics, Cultural Narratology, Semiotics of Culture, Critical Analysis of Discourses, Discourse Analysis of Media Text, Language and the World, Philosophy of Culture, Science and/vs. Pop Culture) - culture and difference (Postcolonial Studies, Ethnicity and Ethnic Groups, Race and Racism, Theory of Globalization, Theory of Migration, Theory of Multiculturalism, Intercultural Communication, Biocultural Anthropology, Culture and/vs. Nature, Religion - Culture - Society) - culture and identity (Identity and Gender, Social Deviations, Feminist Critique, Male Studies, Gender - Media - Pop Culture, Queer Theory: Queer - Media - Pop Culture, Lifestyle Theory) - culture and postmodernism (Transformations of Modernity, Between Modernism and Postmodernism, Theory of Globalization, Postmodern Sciences) - culture and history (History and Present: (Re)Construction of History, Text and Context, The Silent Half of Humanity?) These blocks/modules are not rigid (e.g. the Silent Half of Humanity can be a part of Culture and History or of Culture and Identity), and students are free to choose the courses based on their specialization. Due to the scope of the issue and its interdisciplinarity, an emphasis is placed on specialization through electives. Specialization facilitates more systematic and deeper study in one or more specific areas within the Master's degree programme, and amplification of learning acquired within the range of courses completed in the Bachelor's programme.
