Course content
Organization of child care, importance of the family, issues of chronically ill children - comprehensiveness of care including rehabilitation care and psychological care. Team cooperation. Developmental features of particular age periods, specific aspects of nursing care. Significance and nature of preventive measures in paediatrics, screening programmes. Care of a child with fever, potential complications. Principles of correct nutrition, feeding of infants, benefits of breastfeeding. Nutrition disorders, diarrhoeal diseases in infants, principles of dietary regimen. Alternative forms of enteral nutrition. Specific aspects of manifestations, course, diagnosing, and treatment of childhood diseases. The most common respiratory diseases, diseases of gastrointestinal tract including malabsorption syndrome, urinary infections, nursing care in patients after surgery, allergic diseases in children. Specific aspects of care of a child with diabetes. A child with a neurological disorder - congenital developmental defects, cerebral palsy, CNS tumours, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a theoretical-practical unit for midwives. Specific aspects of nursing care of the needs of children at particular age periods (excluding the neonatal period which is dealt with separately) are presented.
After finishing the course students will be able: to implement their acquired knowledge in the area of diagnosis and therapy of paediatric patiens, to concider somatic, mental and immunological specialities of children, to provide basic nursing care (e. g. hygiene, preparation of infusion and tubing, cathetrization).

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

100% active attendance at seminars. Defense of the nursing process in a patient (child).
