Course content
The course focuses on improving the student´s level of English in the following fields: Reading and comprehension of academic texts in English; different genres of academic texts; general academic English vocabulary and vocabulary aimed at the student´s fields of study; specific English grammar phenomena in academic contexts; presentation skills for conferences, lectures and seminars; comprehension of spoken English. The course should prepare the students for working with English texts on an academic level, actively use academic texts, and independently participate in discussions or present material in their field of study. The course is based on: academic literature, further material focusing on vocabulary argumentation skills, work with audiovisual tools, communicative skills through reading, writing, and discussions preparation and presentation of the student´s own academic work. Writing skills: 2 days - how to write a good paper (structure of a good writing, genres, possible mistakes Czechlish?) - word list of suitable words for academic writing on their art topics - All these topics will be trained with the students through practical activities (writing a paper). Speaking skills: 2 days - how to prepare for a good presentation (structure, style, common mistakes etc.) - word list of suitable words for discussions academic topics - All these topics will be trained with the students through practical activities.

Learning outcomes
The course aims at improving the PhD students ability to function freely in an English speaking academic environment. This means achieving an improved level of Academic English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The course will focus on absorbing and producing academic language for practical use, including presentation skills, writing skills, argumentation, and other abilities necessary to participate in postgraduate studies at university and beyond. The course will be held in February from 10 to 14, 2014.
The ability to systematically work with English on an academic level. Improved practical skills for using English actively in the academic world, focusing on studying and presenting. This includes absorbing academical texts, actively participating in seminars and discussions, and being able to both produce texts of their own and presenting their projects and research.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of English at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Knowledge of English at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference. Active participation throughout the course. Study the required reading list. Complete the required home assignments. Completing the credit assignment according to the requirements.
