Course content
The lectures will be focused especially on introducing the students into the issues of research activities funding and presentation of accessible grant types, as well as acquainting the students with the project management principles and available accounting records utilization. The subject extent: 12x2 hours, finished by the colloquium. Lecture topics: a) Financing of research: 1) Principles of science and research funding, types of financial sources; 2) Most common national and European grant types; b) Introduction to financial management, accounting principles: 3) Accounting and financial management: basic terminology; 4) Budget structure, characteristics of basic budget items; 5) Most common cost and profit types, profit and loss statement; 6) Basic financial indicators; c) Project management: 7) Project preparation, process of project application; 8) Project budget planning, ways of the budget drawing, most common project cost types; 9) Process of project realization from the start to the closing report; 10) Reporting and monitoring of the project; 11) Utilization of the financial indicators and accounting reports within the project; 12) Principles of effective project management

Learning outcomes
The primary goal of the subject is to acquaint the students with the principles of financing science and research activities. It will introduce students to the basic principles of project management in all its phases, from the project application preparation and choice of suitable grant funding via the practical and financial management of the project realization to the successful project termination. Especially use of financial management tools will be emphasized, such as budget planning and introduction to the main budget chapters or use of accounting records for successful project management.
Completing the course will enable the students to familiarize with accessible financial sources for research work funding; the subject will also help the students obtain complex awareness of applying for research projects as a practical way of financing their own research activities and their management. The students will also get basic insight into the accounting system and most widely used financial management tools.
Prerequisites
The subject is aimed mainly to master (possibly also bachelor) students of chemical and biological specializations at Faculty of Science, Palacky University in Olomouc.

Assessment methods and criteria
Seminar Work

For successful course completion, the students will elaborate their own brief research project application, where they will use the knowledge of project and financial management they have gained during the course.
