Course content
The Christianization of Czech Lands. The Church under the Přemyslid and Luxemburg Dynasty. The Hussite movement and the Hussite Wars. Historiography. Humanism and the Renaissance. Two reforms, their concurrences and conflicts: protest and continuity. The situation of the Czech Church in the emergent Habsburg Monarchy. The Thirty Years War. The status of the Church after the Thirty Years War. The Baroque and Baroque religiosity. The Anti-reformation and the Catholic Reformation in the Czech lands. The Enlightenment and its manifestations in Europe and in the Church. Josephinism. The Church in the world of the 19th century: the French Revolution and its impact on the Church, secularization, national movement, liberalism. Modernism and anti-modernism. The status of the Catholic Church in the Habsburg Monarchy. The status of the Church in the interwar period, its attitudes towards new political problems (Communism, Nazism). The First World War, the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic and its impact on the development of the Church in our state between the two world wars. The Church in the period of the Second World War and after the war.
