Course content
The course of Information systems consists of lectures and seminars and is intended for students of the third year of any bachelor-degree program. After a general introduction to Information systems (IS), the curse focuses in IS from the presentation point of view. Markup and related languages for creation of statical web pages (HTML, CSS, XML, XSL etc.), basics of programming languages for creation of dynamic web pages and internet applications using database technologies (PHP, ASP) and other related web technologies are introduced and trained in the seminars. The course is, in fact, a tutorial and its contents is targeted to application. However, the requirements on students are the same for all study fields. <ol> <li> Information systems (IS). Introduction, characteristics, architecture. </li> <li> Business IS. The creation of IS. Internet (web) presentation interface of IS. </li> <li> Markup language (X)HTML. Cascading styles (CSS). Peculiarities of web browsers. </li> <li> Basics of DOM, JavaScript language, Java applets and dynamic HTML (DHTML). </li> <li> WWW service and HTTP protocol. CGI interface, SSI directives. Cookies, sessions. </li> <li> Introduction to PHP programming. </li> <li> Introduction to ASP programming. </li> <li> Working with a database in PHP and ASP. </li> <li> XML markup (meta)language. Languages DTD, XML Schema and RelaxNG for describing a XML scheme. </li> <li> Transformations of XML with XSL and FO, XPath. </li> </ol>

5. Synthesis Propose information systems supporting particular problem domains.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of computer networks and database technologies, user level knowledge of WWW internet service, and basic algorithmic abilities are assumed. Knowledge of any programming language is beneficial.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Student performance

Credit: Design and implementation of a nontrivial dynamic internet application presenting data stored in database or XML files. Exam: Verification of knowledge of the material covered in the course by means of a written test.
