Course content
1. Definition and aims of biophysics. Methods of biophysical analysis. 2. Basics of biophysical measurement theory. Measurement errors. Basics of mathematical statistics. 3. Monitoring of biosignals. Oscilloscope, measurement of frequency and amplitude of signals. 4. Bioenergetics, thermodynamic system, law of thermodynamics. Entropy and thermodynamics of living organisms. 5. Biocybernetics, cybernetic system. Transmission and transition response. Basic cybernetic systems and connections, control circuit. 6. Theory of information, information channel, redundant information. 7. Body temperature, physical mechanisms of heat exchange. Heat balance, thermoregulation mechanisms. 8. Ultrasound and its properties. Biological effects and therapeutic applications. 9. Passive electric properties of tissues. Impedance, impedance measurement methods. Equivalent circuit of cell and tissue. 10. Active electric properties of tissues. Resting membrane potential and action potential. Origination and propagation of action potential in tissues. EMG and ECG. 11. Electric current and magnetic field. Biological effects, electrotherapy and magnetotherapy. Irritation of tissues by electric impulses. 12. Electromagnetic field, spectrum, properties and biological effects. Shortwave (capacitive and inductive) and microwave diathermy. Infrared and ultraviolet radiation. 13. Laser, principles of functioning. Properties and biological effects of laser radiation, applications in therapy. 14. RTG radiation, properties, X-ray tube. Biological effects and application in medical diagnostics and therapy. 15. Heart rate, heart rate variability, spectral analysis.

Learning outcomes
The aim is to get basic knowledge of biophysics with an emphasis on the explanation of the effects of physical factors on the human body and biophysical principles of diagnostic and therapeutic devices. Information about this course was translated to English within the project Internationalization of the Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacký University, Olomouc, No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0028, co-funded by the European Social Fund and the Government of the Czech Republic.
The student has a basic theoretical overview in the area of biophysics, and can define basic concepts and describe main approaches. The student can describe physical principles of diagnostic and therapeutic devices used in own study specialization.
Secondary grammar school or secondary health school knowledge of biology, physics and mathematics.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam, Seminar Work

Minimum attendance in seminars 80%, submission of a written project on a given topic, submission of a measurement protocol, oral test.
