Course content
Subject's contents: Information technology and its classification. Types of computer networks based on various aspects, advantages and disadvantages, network operating systems. Structure and operation of a computer network (access rights, file attributes, Novell NetWare - structure of difectories, disc mapping). Internet - characteristics, Internet as an information source. Basic classification of hardware, structure of a computer and its individual functional blocks. Peripheries (scanners, printers, etc.). Application software - classification, characteristics of programmes. Operating systems - characteristics, classification, MSDOS, superstructure of Windows 3.1X, WINDOWS 95/98/2000/Me/XP, operation, characteristics, differences, multitasking. Office programme packages. Graphic programmes, Compression programmes - purpose, classification, characteristics. Presentation programmes. Computer viruses and protection against them, types of viruses based on various aspects, antivirus programmes, symptoms of viruses, principles of safe PC work. Multimedia.

Lecture, Work with Text (with Book, Textbook), Projection (static, dynamic)

Learning outcomes
Basic characteristics and attributes of information technologies. Types of computer networks, advantages, disdvatages. Construction and maintenance of a computer network. Internet. Computer components, structure, types of computers, hardware, software. Safety of work.
On completion of the course, students should be able to: define basic terms used in IT and explain relations between them; be familiar with basic structure of computer networks, and with computer hardware and software.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of informatics and computer skills at secondary school level

Oral exam, Student performance

Based on individual tasks to prove basic awareness and practical skills of the subject.
