Course content
- Introduction to methodology (definition of the field) - The objectives of exploration - Dynamics of testing theories - Concepts, Systems (operationalization, definition) - Natural systems and modelling - The research proposal and ?timetable?, research questions - Scientific literature and how to work with it (databases) - Population and sample - Ethical and other aspects of psychological research and publishing - Variables (dependent and independent variable, scheme S-O-R, nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio scale etc.) - Methods of data collection (in relation to psychological assessment)

Learning outcomes
The course ZM1 is designed to familiarize students with the basics of scientific work and research. Students obtain knowledge of the different phases of scientific research and get familiar with the theory of scientific research methods, ethical rules and funding opportunities etc. Lectures are dedicated to these topics: modelling and reduction in psychological research, operationalizing, formulation of research problem, questions and hypotheses, the selection of research methods etc.
Knowledge and skills: Student (upon finishing this course): - is able to define what is the subject of methodology and understand the main objectives and principles of scientific method - knows the preparatory and implementation phase of the research and the key tasks in these phases - knows the process of operationalization of the variables used in the research and understand the principles of modelling of natural systems in psychological research - knows the rules of ethics for research in psychology - is able perform a recherché in a specific research topic using electronic databases and proper keywords - is able to choose the appropriate methods of data collecting and sampling methods
This course is obligatory (class A) and there are no prerequisites.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Student performance, Didactic Test, Seminar Work

Knowledge is verified in written test with closed and open-ended answers. Furthermore, all of this knowledge (course ZM1) is required and verified in other follow up courses (ZM2, KM, QM and EM2). Classification output: Credits are awarded for a minimum of 70% attendance at lectures but also for mastering the final test at least 70%. Literature: Ferjenčík, J. (2000).
